ACB 2000

The ABC of ACB2000:

The ACB2000 works on a principle of “sniff and tell”. The sample is heated in a controlled and precise manner. Upon heating, the sample undergoes pyrolysis (pyro=fire, heat; lysis=loosening, fragmentation). Pyrolysis generates vapor (“sniff”) from the sample representing  the compounds that makeup the sample. The vapor is deposited in an especially designed, lightweight gas-chromatography (GC) system (patent # 5,856,616). The GC-column is thermally programmed to sequentially release individual compounds that makeup the vapor. These compounds are detected by a differential Mobility Spectrometer (DMS) and which “tells” the identity of these compounds.

The resultant data reveals the classification of biological sample into, gram-positive spore (such as anthrax), gram-positive vegetative bacteria, gram-negative bacteria (such as plague), protein (toxic proteins such as Mellitin, SEB etc) and virus (such as Ebola virus). In the case of chemical agents, the process is simple, since there is only one compound involved. Also, if chemical agent is present in vapor form, then the heating step is not needed. The system is capable of identifying chemical agents.
